ESSENTIALS ONE: leading self

Essentials 1 (E1) is designed to provide a foundation for a life of discipleship and mission. Three weekend seminars will cover the basics of Christian identity and practices.

ONE COURSE IN THREE SESSIONS

E1 SESSION 1 | FEB. 9 | 9AM-2PM

In the first session of Essentials 1, we will explore what it means to live out a Gospel Identity as well as how to cultivate a more personal relationship with God, moving beyond simply knowing about God into truly knowing God.

E1 SESSION 2 | MAR. 9 | 9AM-2PM

Our second session of Essentials 1 will help us become more proficient in reading, understanding, and applying the Bible. Our goal is to grow an enjoyable life of prayer, and to encounter the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.

E1 SESSION 3 | APR. 6 | 9AM-2PM

The final Essentials 1 session will serve to equip you in cultivating healthy relationships, living with a missional heart that is focused on making disciples, and exercising wisdom in managing the abilities, resources, and opportunities that God entrusts to you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHO IS THE ESSENTIALS 1 COURSE FOR?

We have designed Essentials 1 to help anyone grow in the most critical disciplines required to faithfully follow Jesus, invest in others, and meaningfully contribute to his mission. Our hope is that every person who calls Church at the Cross home would go through Essentials 1.

WHAT DOES THE E1 COURSE SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?

Essentials 1 is a semester long teaching and training environment that meets in three sessions in the span of three months. Each session runs from 9am - 2pm on a Saturday (February 9, March 9, and April 6) and includes 3 major teaching segments led by a pastor or elder.

WHAT IF I CANNOT ATTEND ALL THREE E1 COURSE SESSIONS?

We have designed the course in such a way that each of the three sessions are critical and necessary to complete Essentials 1. We hope that each participant will be able to attend every session in person, but we understand that conflicts arise. We will record each session. To complete Essentials, we will require that any session that is missed is to be made up via video. If you know that you will miss more than one of the sessions, we encourage you to take Essentials at a later date.

WHAT ARE THE E1 COURSE REQUIREMENTS?

To complete the E1 Course, you must attend at least 2 of 3 sessions (and make up any missed sessions via video). In addition, in the weeks between sessions, you will have some short assignments to complete to help you implement and apply the content learned in the sessions. These assignments include tasks like journaled responses to short articles and videos as well as prayer and scripture exercises. The assignments between the session keep Essentials from simply becoming an exercise in receiving information and more of a true teaching and training initiative.

WHAT WILL MY CHILDREN BE DOING DURING THE SESSIONS?

For anyone taking the Essentials course we will provide both childcare for birth through 2-year-olds, as well as age appropriate “Essential Kids” for 3-year-olds - 5th grade. Our Children’s Ministry will be providing teaching and training for our children using materials that loosely connect to the materials you will be learning in Essentials. We see this as a real opportunity for families to be discipled and shaped together, growing our faith alongside one another. We want this to be a helpful and meaningful discipleship opportunity for your children as well as for you.

WHAT’S NEXT AFTER I COMPLETE THE E1 COURSE?

Those who want to go further in their training can apply for Essentials 2. Essentials 2 is designed to be a 14 week learning cohort led by an elder or pastor or ministry leader. The focus of the learning cohort is on Leading Others and will further equip people in forming their convictions, their character and their competencies to lead and minister to others in various ministry contexts. However, we have no further expectations on anyone completing Essentials 1. Our hope is that you will have grown in your faith and in your confidence to share with others what you have learned through Essentials 1. We hope that you will be a more equipped follower of Jesus and a better prepared life group participant who invests in the lives of others.
