Saturday of Holy Week

On this day, Jesus’ body lay in the tomb. This final devotion comes from Sister Wendy’s Holy Week reflection as she considers Mark Cazalet’s work, “Easter Saturday.” You can view this work in our CATC gallery in our Atrium.

Easter Saturday, usually called Holy Saturday, can seem to be a non-day. The church is still in silence, the tabernacle is empty. Yet this is a day of the most radiant expectation.

Think of the wonder of being on the brink of something you most long for; a birth, a wedding, a glorious fulfillment. It seems almost too good to be true that tomorrow Jesus will rise from the dead and transform our lives. All we have longed for during Lent is about to come to an unimaginable climax of reality. Mark Cazalet draws with colored chalk on paper to show a little clearing in the small wood near his Suffolk home. The light is ethereal. We know we are in the presence of something greater than we can see.

A few questions to consider:

As the season of Lent draws to a close in the glorious power of the resurrection, take a moment to consider the various ways God has moved in your life during this season. What has he taught you? What has he shown you? What insights or disciplines do you need to carry over into your everyday life with God?

As we eagerly anticipate and approach the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus’ victory over sin and death, we can’t help but be reminded that Christian joy and delight in God is contagious. When we truly know that Jesus died, our sins are forgiven, that Jesus was buried and rose again, our joy spills over onto the lives of others. Would you consider 2 or 3 believers you could reach out to this week to encourage and strengthen in faith? Who could you contact and encourage with joy?

Are there 2 or 3 people in your life who are not followers of Jesus you could reach out to this week to love and encourage them? What day and time will you contact them?
