God of the Details

Recently, a young woman called the church to ask for some help with a ride to a homeless shelter. She was 29 years old and 26 weeks pregnant. She was calling from the Women’s Clinic of Grapevine. Dawn, our Office Administrator, was confused as to why she would need our help if she was already at the Women’s Clinic, but took down her information anyways.

The Women’s Care Clinic of Grapevine has a faithful partnership with an adoption ministry. Earlier that day, this ministry sent a pregnancy counselor to the clinic to help the woman secure some sustainable help. The counselor was able to secure a spot for her at a non-profit organization that provides community living within a safe environment. They are focused on assisting women who are pregnant and homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Now the woman had no place to spend the night and needed transportation.

The counselor's work landed the woman a place to live, however, it wasn’t available until the next Monday morning, almost a full week away. While she was waiting for her new home to be available, the counselor found a place for her at a temporary shelter in Dallas. Finding housing in this current situation is difficult to do, and even this housing would not be available until the next day. Now the woman had no place to spend the night and needed transportation.

This is where the phone call to Church at the Cross comes in. Thanks to Dawn (our Office Administrator from the beginning of the story who originally answered the call), we were able to call her later that day and hear her story.

Pastor of Care, Pete, and his wife, Sherry, had the joy of meeting up with this young woman and the counselor early that evening. The counselor handed her off to us. On behalf of our church family, we took her to get some items she needed, helped her get into a hotel for the night, and provided her with an Uber gift card that will get her transportation for her next steps and beyond. We were blessed to have some encouraging gospel conversation with her through the process and had the chance to supply her with a bible and devotional.

But that is not the best news. After hearing her full story, we learned that she trusted in Jesus with her life earlier that day through the faithful witness of the counselors at the Women’s Care Clinic.

After parting ways with the young woman, Pete texted the counselor to let her know that our new friend was safe and sound. The counselor messaged us this back:

“Awesome! Wow, it’s so neat to see how God orchestrates details. I’m always amazed and humbled to be a part of His plan. Thank you CATC for partnering with us in that ministry opportunity. Thank you for being a true reflection of Him! Such a blessing!”

Our God is one of the intimate details. He uses his people to accomplish his care for the vulnerable, the weary, and the lost. Dawn received a phone call that didn’t make much sense. There were frustrations that certain housing wasn’t immediately available. Our staff had to dig through the details to understand the full story. Every step of the work had disruptions, but God was using these diversions to form relationships, to show people his love through his Church, and to carry out his plan. God is not far away. He is near to the brokenhearted. He may not be working in a way that seems obvious to you or to me, but he is working none the less, and his work is perfect.
